Congratulations to Jan, who has won the Best Graduate Paper Award from the European International Studies Association (IESA) for a paper entitled "Intervention from nowhere: Technocratic internationalism and the Suez Canal, 1856-81".
His OOC DTP-funded research on the nineteenth-century history of international relations asks, how did expertise come to be a central ingredient of global governance? Based on a dissertation chapter, his paper examines the making of the Suez Canal as an experiment with the use of experts in transnational projects to better understand this linkage.
Jan says, "I’m very honoured to have received the EISA Best Graduate Paper award for this piece, which comes as a great encouragement during the final stages of my DPhil.”
An abstract of the paper is available here.
