Congratulations to Maya M. Haidar!
We are very proud of Maya who presented a lightning talk titled, "Intimacy and Distance in the Letters of Emily Eden (1837-40) and Toru Dutt (1873-77): a Comparative Study". Maya presented on a panel with other postgraduate and early career researchers at the "Letters and Literature 1500-2025: Histories, Forms, Communities" online conference organised by the Open University.
Her 7-minute presentation explored the relationship between literary form and cultural displacement in the private correspondences of the 19th century authors Emily Eden and Toru Dutt. Maya's study directs its attention to the aesthetics of detail in their writing, focusing on the employment of literary references and multilingualism as engendering intimacy while distancing the reader.
