Ashkan Hashemipour is a doctoral candidate in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Oxford. His research centres on the international dimensions of the 1979 Iranian Revolution, focusing particularly on how Iranian guerrilla activists formed relationships with foreign liberation movements and governments. To pursue this research, Ashkan combines oral history interviews with archival research and the analysis of activists’ memoirs. He has presented his work at various conferences, including the Middle East Studies Association and the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies, and has published in peer-reviewed journals, most recently in Middle Eastern Studies.
Prior to beginning his DPhil, Ashkan completed an MPhil with Distinction in Modern Middle Eastern Studies at Oxford and also holds a BA with Honors in Political Science and Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations from the University of Chicago.
In addition to his research, Ashkan is passionate about languages. He is fully fluent in Persian, French, and Spanish, has proficiency in Arabic and Portuguese, and is currently learning Azerbaijani.
