My research explores the reception of the age of Bede during the Benedictine reform, especially during the reign of Æthelred II (978-1016). A particular focus of my project is on the lesser-known writings of Byrhtferth of Ramsey and Wulfstan of York, and how they each assessed and recast received historical narratives to align with their own theological, political, and local necessities. I am based within the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic and am supervised by Prof. Rory Naismith. My research is joint funded by Corpus Christi College and the OOC DTP. I previously studied English and History at Durham (BA, 2018), and Medieval Literature at Oxford (MSt, 2019).
A particular highlight of my PhD so far was doing a three month placement (supported by the OOC DTP) in the Books and Manuscripts Department at Christie's, where I assisted with preparation for two manuscript sales. egc33@cam.ac.uk
