My research project will examine, on comparative registers, the theological and philosophical worldviews of two major philosopher-poets of the Indian subcontinent – Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), two of whose Bengali songs are the national anthems of India and Bangladesh, and Muhammad Iqbal (1877-1938), often regarded as the spiritual father of Pakistan. By engaging with the socio-religious thought of Muhammad Iqbal and Rabindranath Tagore through a comparative lens, my research will explore some distinctive iterations of South Asian Islam and their ongoing linguistic, intellectual, and cultural exchanges with certain Hindu theological concepts, philosophical imageries, and devotional literatures.
