James commenced doctoral research at Cambridge in October 2023. His project, 'On Addiction and Criminal Law', examines the intersection between English criminal law and substance dependency, focusing on legal doctrine and theory.
The interdisciplinary project draws on philosophical responses to developments in neuroscience to provide a comprehensive analysis of the ethics of contemporary regulations. James is the lead author on 'Challenging Prior-Fault Intoxication: Addiction Pathways and the Question of Responsibility', which will form part of an edited collection due for publication by Hart in 2024.
He holds an LLB from the London School of Economics and an LLM from the University of Birmingham. The latter culminated in his thesis 'Compulsion or Choice? Addiction and Prior-Fault Intoxication'.
Prior to doctoral research at Cambridge, James was a Staff Writer at The Lawyer magazine in London, where he published extensively on topics including policy reform, the UK legal market and the effect of generative AI on legal practice.
