Madeleine is a PhD student jointly supervised by Professor Amy Erickson and Dr. Alexis Litvine at the University of Cambridge. Her research explores the impact of the British Empire on London’s built environment, focusing on the property ownership of the East India Company and its Court of Directors in the imperial capital between 1729 and 1858. Using company ledgers, insurance policy records, biographical sources, and historical maps, she employs a spatial and network analysis to examine how imperial power shaped the urban landscape.
She holds a B.A. in Modern History from the University of St Andrews, an M.A. in the Cultural History of Modern Europe from Utrecht University, and an M.A. in History from the University of Texas, Arlington. She is a member of the Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure (CAMPOP) and the convenor of the Economic and Social History Workshop for 2025-2026. Her research is an Open-Oxford-Cambridge AHRC DTP-funded Collaborative Doctoral Award in partnership with the Aviva Group.
